Questions We Hear Often
How do I know if I need a retaining wall?
If a slope keeps you from using part of the yard, if soil or mulch washes downhill, or if you want a level area for a patio or lawn, a wall is usually the answer. We will tell you plainly if a simpler solution would work.
What keeps a wall from leaning or failing?
What is behind and beneath it. A compacted base, drainage stone, drain pipe and proper backfill relieve the water pressure that pushes walls over. We build every wall that way.
Which material is right for my property?
It depends on the height of the wall, the style of the house and the rest of the landscape. We will show you options in natural stone, segmental block and boulders and explain the differences.
Can steps, lighting or seating be built into the wall?
Yes. Walls are often designed with steps, cap stones for seating, planting pockets and low voltage lighting.
Do taller walls need engineering or a permit?
They can, depending on the height and the local rules where you live. We will tell you what applies to your project during the design stage.
